Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that he and US President Donald Trump agreed to work jointly on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. The agreement followed one of the largest Russian air attacks on Kyiv since the invasion began in 2022.
The discussion came shortly after the United States halted key arms deliveries, including artillery rounds and Patriot air defense systems. This decision surprised both Ukraine and its Western allies at a time when Russian missile and drone attacks are intensifying.
As the US suspends military support, Germany is stepping in. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed delivering at least two additional Patriot systems to Ukraine, including interceptors, and covering the full cost of the shipment. Merz reportedly raised the issue during a recent call with Trump, reflecting growing European concern over US hesitation.
Russian forces launched over 500 drones and missiles during the night, focusing mainly on Kyiv. While Ukrainian air defenses intercepted the majority of them, casualties and injuries were reported. Despite the bombardment, Russian troops have made only limited advances on the ground, sustaining heavy losses. Estimates suggest that Russian casualties—killed and wounded—have now exceeded 1 million since the invasion began.
The renewed diplomatic outreach between Trump and Zelenskiy marks a shift in Washington’s approach, as the US president continues to pursue his campaign pledge to end the war, though Russia shows no signs of compromise. President Putin reaffirmed his war objectives during a separate phone call with Trump, rejecting any ceasefire efforts.
