NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called on the United States to maintain its support for Ukraine after Washington paused the delivery of essential military supplies. The decision by the Pentagon was based on an internal review of stockpiles and concerns about the US’s ability to meet other global security obligations.
The US suspension came at a critical moment. Russian drone and missile attacks have escalated, hitting Kyiv and other major cities. Ukraine’s air defenses have shown signs of vulnerability, while current US funding for military aid is set to expire in the coming months.
In an effort to restore the flow of weapons, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump. The Ukrainian side is pressing Washington to resume deliveries and approve further arms sales as the war enters its fourth year without signs of de-escalation.
Rutte made his remarks at NATO’s military headquarters in Mons, Belgium, during a ceremony welcoming General Alexus Grynkewich as the new commander of US forces in Europe. Grynkewich announced plans to conduct a full review of US military posture on the continent within 90 days.
The upcoming US strategic defense review, expected later this summer, may outline troop reductions in Europe. This has raised concerns among NATO allies who have not been fully briefed on Washington’s future plans.
