Multiple cargo vessels were struck by unknown projectiles on Wednesday in the Strait of Hormuz, according to maritime security agencies, raising concerns about shipping safety in one of the world’s most important energy routes.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that most of the crew of a Thailand-flagged bulk carrier were evacuated after the vessel caught fire off the coast of Oman.
Thailand’s navy later identified the vessel as Mayuree Naree, saying it had been attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the navy, 20 crew members were rescued by Omani naval forces while efforts continued to rescue three remaining crew members. Authorities said the cause of the attack remains under investigation.
A Japan-flagged container ship was also struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.
Security sources said the vessel sustained minor damage but the crew was unharmed and the ship was heading toward a safe anchorage.
Another bulk carrier flying the flag of the Marshall Islands was also hit by a projectile and suffered slight damage.
UK maritime authorities later confirmed a third cargo vessel had been hit at around 02:05 GMT, approximately 93 kilometers northwest of Dubai.
Officials said the crew of that vessel were “safe and well,” and no environmental damage was reported.
The incidents come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where commercial shipping routes are closely monitored due to their importance for global trade and energy transport.
