Zelensky Visits Berlin Amid Deepening Ties With Germany

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Berlin on Wednesday for his third meeting in as many weeks with newly elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, highlighting a fast-warming alliance as Berlin steps into a larger leadership role in Europe.

Zelensky’s visit underscores Merz’s pro-Ukrainian pivot just weeks into office. “In Ukraine, nothing less than the peace order of our entire continent is at stake,” Merz told lawmakers in his first parliamentary address, affirming support for sanctions against Russia and continued aid to Kyiv.

Merz’s approach marks a sharp departure from that of former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was criticized for delaying visits and arms deliveries during the early phase of the war. Within days of taking office, Merz visited Kyiv alongside French and Polish leaders.

Taurus Missiles and Military Aid in Focus

High on Zelensky’s agenda is securing long-range Taurus missiles, jointly developed by Germany and Sweden. Merz previously indicated he is open to their export, a decision that would significantly bolster Ukraine’s strike capabilities amid uncertain U.S. support.

The two leaders are expected to address this issue in private talks before holding a joint press conference at the Chancellery.

Zelensky’s Berlin trip comes at a moment when NATO cohesion is being tested by waning American engagement. Merz’s leadership signals Germany’s intent to step into a more assertive defense and diplomatic role within Europe.

Later in the day, Zelensky will also meet President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Palace. Large areas of Berlin’s government district have been locked down for the visit, reflecting the heightened security and symbolic significance of this growing partnership.
