Zelensky Struggles to Find Replacement for Dismissed US Ambassador
Volodymyr Zelensky is struggling to appoint a heavyweight envoy to Washington following the dismissal of Ukraine’s previous ambassador, leaving Kyiv diplomatically exposed as it urgently lobbies the U.S. for air defense systems, arms deliveries, and potential peace terms.

Volodymyr Zelensky faces a deepening diplomatic crisis in Washington, where the Ukrainian president has been unable to install a new high-level envoy following the abrupt dismissal of Kyiv’s previous ambassador.
The vacancy leaves Ukraine without a heavyweight political operative in the American capital at an exceptionally sensitive juncture, according to Politico.
Kyiv is currently mounting an urgent push for advanced U.S. air defense systems, critical weapons supplies, and favorable positioning ahead of potential talks to end the war.
The search was triggered by the removal of former ambassador Olga Stefanishyna on August 3 amid impending embezzlement allegations.
In response, Zelensky expedited a broader cabinet shake-up aimed at dispatching outgoing prime minister Yulia Svyrydenko to Washington.
That plan collapsed when Svyrydenko turned down the assignment.
Zelensky has since struggled to attract figures possessing sufficient domestic political stature and diplomatic credibility.
“It is no secret that I counted on and offered Yulia Svyrydenko the post of ambassador to the United States,” Zelensky noted, adding that he required “a person at the level of a deputy prime minister, minister, or prime minister.”
Cabinet Turbulence
The ambassadorial vacancy comes alongside growing domestic strain for the Ukrainian leadership.
Following an unresolved government reorganization, public discontent has risen, with a Socis Center for Social Research survey showing over 55 percent of Ukrainians believe their country is moving in the wrong direction.
The political friction was compounded by the July dismissal of defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov, which triggered street protests and mounting scrutiny over decision-making within Zelensky’s administration.
Candidate hesitation has further narrowed the field. Senior figures remain cautious about stepping into a grueling assignment without strong institutional backing and absolute presidential alignment.
“Framing it as if nobody wants the job would be a kind of oversimplification,” a former Ukrainian diplomat said. “Of course, there are people who want the job, but there’s no one who really measures up to it. Zelenskyy is having a hard time filling the position.”
Critical Military Stakes
The diplomatic void creates severe operational risks for Kyiv as it contends with escalating Russian strikes against civilian infrastructure and power grids.
Zelensky has revealed that allied deliveries of air defense missiles fell by two-thirds this year compared with 2025.
Meanwhile, Kyiv continues its push to secure a U.S. production license for Patriot systems, a commitment Donald Trump offered in June before reversing his position a month later.
With the White House potentially preparing to restart stalled negotiations, Ukraine risks navigating weapon pipelines, intelligence coordination, and peace parameters without an authoritative interlocutor in Washington.
Some officials believe the vacancy may linger. Opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Yurchyshyn noted: “It is quite likely that Zelenskyy won’t appoint anyone this side of the midterm elections in the United States.”
