Speaking before a joint session of Congress, U.S. President Donald Trump urged legislators to stand if they agreed with what he described as a “fundamental principle” of his administration: that the first duty of the US government is to protect American citizens, not undocumented immigrants.

Democratic lawmakers remained seated, prompting Trump to respond from the podium: “You should be ashamed of yourself, not standing up. You should be ashamed of yourself.” He also called on Congress to end sanctuary city policies and impose penalties on officials obstructing the removal of undocumented immigrants accused of serious crimes.

As Trump spoke, Rep. Ilhan Omar interjected from the House floor, shouting: “You’re killing Americans! You have killed Americans!” She added, “You should be ashamed!” The remarks underscored heightened tensions between the White House and progressive Democrats over immigration enforcement policies.
