Who is Mykhailo Drapatyi? Ukraine's New Commander-in-Chief Takes Charge

President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi as commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, replacing General Oleksandr Syrskyi after days of street protests in Kyiv.

The appointment of the 43-year-old combat officer marks a generational turning point for the Ukrainian military, replacing Soviet-era command traditions with a technology-driven, decentralized warfare doctrine.

Drapatyi takes charge as Ukraine faces persistent Russian pressure in the east, recruitment shortfalls, and a critical need to accelerate battlefield innovation.

A Frontline Track Record

Drapatyi, a western Ukraine native born in 1982, began his military career as a tank officer after graduating from the Kharkiv Tank Forces Institute in 2004.

He gained national prominence during the 2014 Donbas conflict when his armored vehicle breached pro-Russian barricades in Mariupol, launching a career defined by high-risk frontline operations.

Following Moscow's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Drapatyi held key operational roles, halting Russian forces near Kryvyi Rih and co-commanding the counteroffensive that liberated Kherson.

In 2024, after stabilizing defense lines during a Russian push near Kharkiv, he became the youngest commander of Ukraine's land forces.

His early tenure in that role ended in June 2025 when he resigned after a Russian strike on a military base killed 12 soldiers, taking personal accountability for the event.

"An army in which commanders bear personal responsibility for people’s lives is a living force. An army in which no one is held accountable for casualties is dying from within," Drapatyi said at the time.

He was subsequently assigned to lead the Joint Forces, overseeing operations along the northeastern front.

A Doctrine of Modern Warfare

For Ukraine, Drapatyi's elevation represents a fundamental departure from the rigid, top-down command structures associated with his predecessor.

A pioneer of the "drone line" concept, Drapatyi championed creating automated kill zones utilizing reconnaissance UAVs, attack drones, and remote turrets to halt enemy armor.

His appointment aligns the military high command with the reform agenda of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was dismissed last week after clashing with Syrskyi over military technology contracts.

Drapatyi had publicly backed Fedorov during the dispute, calling for faster decision-making, greater operational latitude for field officers, and systemic military reform.

"I believe in the Ukrainian armed forces, which are capable of learning, developing technology, protecting people and allowing commanders to take responsibility for the outcome," Drapatyi wrote on social media.

Military analysts view his selection as an effort to restore public trust, appease protesters, and boost frontline morale after criticism over heavy troop losses.

Strategic Imperatives and Moscow's Reaction

As commander in chief, Drapatyi faces immediate operational hurdles, including managing force replenishment, protecting critical infrastructure, and maintaining long-range strike campaigns inside Russian territory.

The transition also carries risks of temporary operational friction while new command teams consolidate control along an active 800-mile front.

Hours after Zelensky announced the appointment, Moscow's Interior Ministry placed Drapatyi on its wanted list, following earlier criminal charges brought by Russian investigators in 2023.

Despite political and strategic pressures, Drapatyi's accession secures a firm institutional focus on technological integration and decentralized leadership for the Ukrainian military.
