Pentagon officials told Congress that the initial week of the US campaign against Iran has cost approximately $6 billion, with $4 billion spent on munitions and advanced missile interceptors designed to neutralize Iranian missile threats. The high expenditure reflects both the intensity and technological cost of the operations, with approximately 4,000 Iranian targets struck, including missile launchers, naval vessels, and air defenses.
Adm. Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), stated that Iran’s ballistic missile launches have dropped 90% and drone attacks are down 83% since the first day of fighting. Despite this, Iran retains a substantial arsenal, including an estimated 50% of its missile program, meaning continued vigilance and expenditure are required to sustain operational advantages.
Lawmakers are preparing for a supplemental budget request to maintain momentum and replenish depleted stockpiles. Officials highlighted concerns over costly interceptors, some valued in the millions of dollars each, which are being consumed rapidly. Critics argue that such consumption could strain the US defense industrial base and create shortfalls in other strategic theaters.
The conflict began with joint US and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,200 people, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, over 150 schoolgirls, and senior military officials. Iran has retaliated with ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting US bases, personnel, and Israeli cities. These exchanges have also disrupted global energy flows, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries approximately 20 million barrels of oil daily.
