A new US assessment has found that American strikes in June destroyed only one of three key Iranian nuclear sites, NBC News reported, citing US officials. The report comes amid rising concerns over Washington’s ability to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions through limited military action.
The strikes targeted underground nuclear facilities, with satellite imagery confirming damage to the Fordow site near Qom. However, NBC News said the other two facilities remain operational. President Donald Trump reportedly rejected a military plan for a more extensive campaign, which would have required weeks of sustained attacks.
The limited damage underscores the challenges of targeting Iran’s hardened nuclear infrastructure, much of which is buried deep underground or fortified against conventional strikes.
The revelation raises fresh doubts about the effectiveness of US efforts to restrain Iran’s nuclear ambitions without escalating into a broader conflict. Analysts warn that partial strikes may only delay, not deter, Iran’s program.
Trump’s administration has continued to frame Iran’s nuclear activities as a top security threat but has hesitated to launch a full-scale military campaign. Iran insists its nuclear work is for peaceful purposes and accuses the US and its allies of hostile actions.
