US Removes Europe and NATO Sections from Ukraine Peace Plan
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that the United States has made significant changes to its 28-point peace plan for Ukraine. During talks in Geneva, Wadephul highlighted that references to Europe and NATO were removed from the plan.
The German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed satisfaction with the US’s involvement in the peace process. Speaking after the Geneva talks, Wadephul described the removal of Europe and NATO-related sections from the plan as “a significant achievement.”
Protecting European Interests
Wadephul stressed that no agreement can be reached without Europe and Ukraine, saying, “We have now taken the first step while protecting European interests.” He reaffirmed Germany’s support for Ukraine, emphasizing that the country’s sovereignty must be respected and that only Ukraine should decide which concessions to make.
The US as Mediator
The minister noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is actively ensuring the plan gains approval from both European and Ukrainian parties. Wadephul said Washington’s role as mediator has been welcomed by European nations.
Russia’s Responsibility and Uncertainties
Wadephul added that it is normal for the US to engage with Russia and underlined that Moscow must bear responsibility for initiating the conflict. However, he cautioned that it is currently impossible to predict the details of any potential agreement between the two sides.
