President Donald Trump honored Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. The ceremony at the White House was attended by Kirk’s family and members of Turning Point USA, the conservative nonprofit organization he founded.
In his speech, Trump said, “Charlie was assassinated because he courageously spoke the truth and tirelessly fought to make America strong again.” The award represents the highest civilian honor in the United States and is the first Presidential Medal of Freedom Trump has awarded in his second term. Previously, the medal has been given to notable figures in arts, science, and politics.
Kirk was shot during a public event and died at the scene. Tyler Robinson, the alleged shooter, was quickly apprehended following a tip from his family. Prosecutors have charged Robinson with first-degree murder and are seeking the death penalty.
Charlie Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, a nonprofit organization promoting conservative values on college campuses. Trump emphasized that Kirk’s legacy will continue to inspire Americans, stating, “Charlie’s legacy will carry on the dream of an America founded on freedom and faith.”
