Top leaders across several US federal agencies are drawing up plans for a potential strike on Iran, with some pointing to a likely weekend operation. The preparations follow an Iranian missile attack on Israel’s Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba—the first strike to hit a hospital since the war began nearly a week ago.
President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly floated the idea of joining Israel's offensive, told reporters he has “ideas as to what to do” but insisted on delaying a final decision, citing the fluid situation. “I may do it. I may not do it,” Trump said, adding that all options remain on the table.
Israel’s Escalation and Expanding War Aims
In response to the hospital strike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to exact “the full price” from Iran. Defense Minister Israel Katz echoed this stance, stating, “Khamenei will be held accountable.” Israel’s campaign now targets not only Iran’s nuclear capabilities but also strategic and governmental sites.
Overnight airstrikes by Israeli jets hit dozens of military positions, including an inactive nuclear reactor in Arak, a site long scrutinized for its plutonium production potential. The Arak-Khondab region remains strategically vital to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
Gulf and Global Reactions
UAE Presidential Adviser Anwar Gargash described the war as “a pivotal moment with far-reaching consequences,” urging an immediate halt to hostilities. Meanwhile, foreign ministers from the UK, France, and Germany plan to hold nuclear talks with Iran’s foreign minister in Geneva.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to diplomacy and denied any pursuit of nuclear weapons.
Political Repercussions for Trump
Trump’s openness to military involvement marks a sharp departure from his earlier diplomatic approach and anti-war stance. Influential voices like Senator Lindsey Graham have pushed him to act. “He gave them a chance for diplomacy. I think they made a miscalculation,” said Graham. “The sooner we end this threat to mankind, the better.”
Still, Trump claims to have encouraged Netanyahu to continue the offensive but has not promised direct US involvement.
