US Offers $10 Million for Hezbollah Tips in Latin America

The US Department of State has announced a reward of up to $10 million for information on Hezbollah's financial networks and operations in Latin America. The offer, released through the State Department’s Rewards for Justice program, aims to disrupt the group's financial activities in the tri-border area where Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay meet. This region has long been known as a hotspot for illicit financial operations and organized crime.

The statement, published in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic, seeks details on Hezbollah's revenue streams, including money laundering, narcotics trafficking, and bulk cash smuggling. It specifically highlights the group's involvement in large-scale trade-based money laundering, charcoal and oil smuggling, counterfeit operations, and document forgery.

Criminal Networks and Regional Expansion

Hezbollah's financial networks in the region reportedly extend beyond drug trafficking, encompassing smuggling operations involving diamonds, luxury goods, and even counterfeit US dollars. Brazil's federal police have been investigating potential connections between Hezbollah and the notorious First Capital Command (PCC) gang since at least 2000. These links are part of broader efforts by criminal organizations to diversify revenue streams and extend influence across multiple illegal sectors, from Amazon gold mining to fintech in Sao Paulo.

Strategic Importance of the Tri-Border Region

The tri-border area has long been recognized as a critical hub for transnational crime, where weak border controls and extensive black-market economies provide ideal conditions for terrorist financing. The US government has repeatedly expressed concern about Hezbollah's presence in this region, viewing it as a significant threat to regional security and global counterterrorism efforts.
