U.S.-Backed Aid Group Begins Gaza Operations as Israeli Strikes Kill Dozens

The U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began delivering aid to Gaza on May 26, even as Israeli airstrikes killed at least 45 people. After weeks of uncertainty and blockade conditions, GHF reported that food trucks had reached distribution sites across southern Gaza.

“More trucks with aid will be delivered tomorrow,” the foundation stated, following the abrupt resignation of its director Jake Wood, who warned the group could not uphold principles of neutrality and independence.

Airstrikes Target Civilians

Among the dead were 30 Palestinians, including displaced women and children, killed while sheltering in a Gaza City school. Israel confirmed striking the building, alleging it was used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad as a command post—claims it did not provide evidence for. A separate strike in Jabalia killed 15 others.

“There is no security or safety, neither at schools, nor hospitals,” said survivor Farah Nussair.

The GHF's aid plan bypasses the UN and traditional aid groups, using four major distribution centers in southern Gaza. The new model may screen aid recipients for Hamas ties using facial recognition or biometrics, sparking ethical concerns and accusations of weaponizing food.

Hamas denounced the system as engineered starvation. Israel insists the method prevents Hamas from seizing supplies—charges Hamas denies.

International Backlash and Famine Warnings

Germany and Sweden have publicly criticized Israel’s recent attacks, with Berlin stating they can “no longer be justified” as defense against Hamas. The UN has warned that nearly the entire Gazan population is at critical famine risk following months of siege.

As U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff downplays reports of a ceasefire breakthrough, the situation in Gaza deteriorates further. Israel continues operations to “eliminate Hamas’ capabilities” and reclaim remaining hostages.
