The White House on Tuesday asked Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, to step down following allegations that she solicited money from a Trump supporter and received expensive hospitality from Greek businessmen.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Katie Zacharia, President Donald Trump’s new press secretary, said Tuesday during her first White House briefing.
Whether Guilfoyle had accepted the request remained unclear.
The decision followed Trump’s public acknowledgment a day earlier that her position was under review. “Well, we're looking at it. Yeah, we're not happy,” he told reporters Monday.
Alleged Debt Payment Request
Reports by The Wall Street Journal have placed Guilfoyle’s personal finances and dealings with wealthy businessmen under scrutiny.
The newspaper said she asked Eric Deters, an influential Trump supporter, to settle $100,000 in personal credit card debt ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025.
“Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” she wrote in a message that included payment instructions for her credit card company, according to screenshots published by the Journal.
Deters told the newspaper he declined because making the payment would have cost him his marriage.
Guilfoyle’s lawyer has challenged the messages’ authenticity and denied wrongdoing.
Businessmen-Funded Travel
The Journal separately reported that Guilfoyle described luxury travel and hotel accommodation paid for by wealthy Greek businessmen.
Its reporting drew on hundreds of messages, emails and other records, as well as recorded conversations.
According to the newspaper, she flew to the World Economic Forum in Davos on a private jet with Alexandros Exarchou, chief executive of Greek construction company Aktor Group.
It also reported that she spent Christmas in Gstaad, the exclusive Swiss ski resort, with shipping magnate Nikolas Tsakos.
On another trip with Tsakos, she stayed at a luxury Paris hotel at his expense, the Journal said.
U.S. media reports say the State Department’s inspector general is examining whether Guilfoyle accepted improper gifts.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to address the allegations during a visit to Athens last week, part of a broader European trip.
Political Connections
A former prosecutor and Fox News host, Guilfoyle became a prominent figure in Trump’s Make America Great Again movement.
Her appointment to Athens followed the end of her engagement to Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son.
She was previously married to Gavin Newsom, California’s Democratic governor.
