UNIFIL Chief Says Lebanese Army Deployed At 120 Southern Sites
UNIFIL commander Aroldo Lázaro announced that the Lebanese army now maintains a permanent presence at more than 120 locations across southern Lebanon, as part of efforts to stabilize the border region.
UNIFIL Commander Major General Aroldo Lázaro has confirmed that the Lebanese army has established a permanent deployment in over 120 locations throughout southern Lebanon. Speaking on the sidelines of security coordination meetings, Lázaro said the expanded presence is intended to support stability in the region, enhance cooperation with UNIFIL, and ensure compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the cessation of hostilities and the prevention of unauthorized armed activity in the area.
Lázaro described the Lebanese army’s deployment as a significant step toward strengthening security in southern Lebanon. He said UNIFIL and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) conduct regular joint patrols, share operational information, and coordinate responses to incidents along the Blue Line. The cooperation is designed to prevent misunderstandings, build mutual trust, and address any potential security breaches.
The UNIFIL chief reiterated the mission’s commitment to supporting Lebanon in fulfilling its obligations under Resolution 1701, emphasizing the importance of maintaining calm and stability along the border. He noted that both UNIFIL and the LAF are working to ensure that the area remains free of unauthorized armed personnel and weapons, in line with the resolution’s terms.
