Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said after the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit that Italy is prepared to support the implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza. Meloni added that, if the plan is carried out, Rome’s recognition of a Palestinian state could become more likely.

"Trump’s a Major Success”

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told reporters after the Sharm el‑Sheikh Peace Summit that the Gaza ceasefire agreement represents a historic step.
“Today is definitely a historic day. I am very proud that Italy is here today,” she said.

Meloni credited U.S. President Donald Trump as one of the key architects of the agreement, adding, “Trump has a right to call this a major success. We hope for the same outcome in other conflicts as well.”

“Recognition of Palestine Possible”

Recalling statements made during the United Nations General Assembly in September, Meloni reiterated that Italy’s recognition of a Palestinian state is conditional.
“If the plan is implemented, Italy’s recognition of Palestine becomes more likely. I aim for a Palestinian state, of course when the conditions set by parliament are met,” she said.

Italy Ready to Oversee Gaza Ceasefire

Meloni stated that Italy is prepared to assume greater responsibilities in the region if requested by the United Nations. “On the security side, the Italian Carabinieri have trained the Palestinian Police for years. We also take part in the EU mission in Rafah. We can increase this presence” she said.

The prime minister stressed that participation in any potential stabilization force would require parliamentary approval, but Italy’s political will is firmly in place:
“This is not mediation; it is monitoring the ceasefire. If the UN adopts a resolution and requests our participation, I will submit it to parliament. My position is clear: if called upon, we are ready,” she said.

She highlighted that Italy is prepared to support the ceasefire and regional security missions, signaling a strong commitment to peace in Gaza.
