Foreign Secretary David Lammy has announced in the House of Commons that the United Kingdom has formally summoned the Israeli ambassador and suspended negotiations over a free trade deal with Israel. The move comes amid escalating concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Lammy delivered a direct message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to "end this blockade now" and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza without restriction. “Netanyahu’s government is isolating Israel from its friends and partners around the world,” he warned.
UK Government Condemns Israeli Attack on Gaza
In a stern statement, Lammy said the UK remains committed to Israel’s security but cautioned that Israel’s actions in Gaza are undermining bilateral ties.
“We are unwavering in our commitment to your security,” Lammy said, but warned, “The conduct of the war in Gaza is damaging our relationship with your government.” He added that unless Israel ensures “unhindered provision of aid,” the UK “will take further action.”
Commons Reacts to 'Dark New Phase' in Gaza
Lammy described the current situation in Gaza as “abominable,” citing widespread starvation, displacement, and psychological trauma. He said Israel’s military operations appear to be entering a “dark new phase” with efforts to forcibly remove Gazans from the territory.
MPs in the Commons erupted with cries of "shame" as Lammy condemned far-right Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich for using the term “cleansing” in reference to Gaza. He labeled the rhetoric “extremist,” “dangerous,” “repellent,” and “monstrous.”
While refusing to label the situation as “genocide,” despite calls from Labour MPs, Lammy maintained a firm stance against Israel’s military actions, calling them “intolerable” and “counterproductive.” He also demanded the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas.
