A cyber vulnerability assessment by the U.K. Ministry of Defense has revealed that cameras equipped on British naval drones transmitted signals directly to an internet address in China.

The hardware in question was integrated into the K3 Scout drone boat, which is manufactured by Kraken Technology. The Fareham-based defense contractor recently secured a $49 million deal to supply unmanned vessels to the U.S. Special Operations Command.

Routine Cyber Audit

Following the discovery, British defense officials stated that the transmitting component did not broadcast any sensitive military intelligence.

“A thorough investigation found no evidence of MOD data or systems being accessed, compromised or transmitted externally,” a ministry spokesman confirmed.

A spokeswoman for Kraken Technology stated that all identified vulnerabilities have since been patched and closed. The Pentagon has not responded to inquiries regarding the procurement issue.

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

The breach underscores a growing crisis for Western defense manufacturers heavily dependent on Chinese hardware. Global drone production remains deeply reliant on Beijing for essential components like cameras, batteries, antennas, and brushless motors.

Industry experts warn that purging these parts from advanced defense systems remains a severe logistical challenge for Western governments.

“It is really, really hard to trace where the stuff comes from if you go all the way down the supply chain, and it is even harder to monitor that on an ongoing basis,” said Steve Wright, a drone manufacturing consultant.

Similar concerns have already triggered defensive actions in Washington. A recent congressional investigation discovered that Chinese cargo cranes operating in U.S. ports contained technology capable of facilitating remote access. Consequently, Washington banned the procurement of new Chinese drones and components late last year.

Market Dominance

China maintains leverage over global defense production by occasionally restricting the export of critical minerals and components. This forces Western defense manufacturers to search globally for new stockpiles, ultimately delaying the production of jet fighters and missile systems.

For nations engaged in active conflicts, cost disparities make Western alternatives difficult to adopt. Ukraine currently consumes approximately 10,000 drones every month, heavily utilizing cheap Chinese parts to sustain its frontline operations.

While some European firms have successfully localized their supply chains, the financial premium is significant.

“A German electric engine is 5 to 10 times more expensive than a Chinese one,” noted Marc Wietfeld, chief executive of Arx Robotics. His firm transitioned to European and U.S. components to ensure operational robustness without relying on Beijing.

The strategic value of naval drones is rapidly escalating in modern warfare. Recent combat deployments have seen the U.S. utilize unmanned vessels to strike Iranian maritime facilities, while Ukrainian forces regularly deploy them against Russian naval targets.
