UK Arrests Alleged Iranian Spy Near RAF Base in Southern Cyprus

South Cypriot authorities arrested a British citizen on espionage and terrorism charges Saturday, accusing him of spying for Iran near RAF Akrotiri, the UK’s main air base for Middle East operations.

Suspect Linked to Iranian Surveillance

The man was initially identified as Azerbaijani by local authorities, but UK officials confirmed he is a British national. He is suspected of monitoring the UK’s Akrotiri base and the nearby Andreas Papandreou airbase, sometimes used by the U.S. Air Force. A regional court ordered him held for eight days as investigations continue.

The operation was reportedly coordinated with MI6 and Israel’s Mossad, highlighting the international dimension of the case. Officials say the suspect had been under surveillance for a month.

Strategic Tensions and Military Posture

The arrest comes amid heightened tensions as the UK dispatches more Typhoon jets to South Cyprus as part of a “contingency” plan to support Israel and counter potential Iranian retaliation. Iran has warned it would target British forces if they support Israeli strikes.

Earlier in the week, the RAF’s Brize Norton base was targeted by activists from Palestine Action. The UK is expected to label the group a terrorist organization.

While Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stressed diplomacy and de-escalation, his government continues to bolster UK forces in the region. Though Britain has not joined Israeli strikes, it has previously assisted in missile defense and reconnaissance. The arrest of a suspected Iranian spy near a critical UK military hub further underscores the growing risk of spillover in the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.
