Two US Troops Killed, One Missing in Iranian Strike on Jordan Base

An Iranian ballistic missile and drone assault on an air base in Jordan has killed two U.S. service members and left another missing.

The fatal strike marks a severe escalation in a weeklong exchange of fire that now threatens to draw Washington into an all-out war with Tehran.

Casualties at Muwaffaq Salti

U.S. Central Command confirmed the deaths and ongoing search efforts at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, a facility utilized by American warplanes.

Four additional service members were evacuated to local hospitals before being discharged, while others sustained minor injuries.

The casualties occurred while partner forces were defending against the inbound Iranian bombardment.

The targeted Jordanian installation, which is defended by a Thaad antimissile system, has been struck repeatedly by Iranian assets throughout the week.

While previous incursions caused minor injuries and radar damage, Friday’s operation marks the first instance of American fatalities at the site.

Collapse of the Ceasefire

The lethal engagement coincided with Tehran's formal withdrawal from a mid-June memorandum of understanding intended to de-escalate the conflict and open the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

In a written statement, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei stated that U.S. violations “have once again proven to everyone the truth of how worthless and invalid the signature of the U.S. president is.”

Khamenei added that the "Iranian nation has unforgettable lessons for the American enemy."

Clashes have rapidly expanded across the Persian Gulf, targeting critical infrastructure, including ships, bridges, and utility facilities.

The disruption to the shipping corridor, which handles a fifth of global oil supplies, has already driven crude prices sharply higher.

Washington Weighs Response

The loss of American life directly challenges President Donald Trump’s previous assertions that the killing of U.S. personnel would prompt a return to full-scale war.

Before Friday's strike, the Pentagon had reported 14 U.S. military fatalities stemming from hostile actions or accidents in the current friction with Iran.

In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Pentagon is scrambling additional air power to the theater.

U.S. F-16 fighters from Germany and stealth F-35 aircraft from the United Kingdom are currently deploying alongside aerial refueling tankers to counter Iranian radar and missile capabilities.
