A delegation of Turkish Special Forces officers visited Somalia’s capital Mogadishu this week, underscoring Ankara’s continued investment in strengthening military cooperation with Somali counterparts amid ongoing security challenges across the Horn of Africa.
The Turkish delegation held strategic discussions with Somali Special Forces Commander Abdihakiin Eeldheer at the General Farhan Mohamoud Qaroole Haramcad Camp. Talks focused on enhancing joint training programs, sharing operational experience, and developing tactical capabilities for Somali elite units.
Commander Eeldheer praised the visit as a “clear indicator” of the growing partnership, noting its importance for Somalia’s ongoing efforts to professionalize its forces.
Ankara's Security Commitment to Somalia
urkey has played a key role in Somalia’s military rebuilding for over a decade. Through its military base “TURKSOM” in Mogadishu, Ankara has trained thousands of Somali soldiers. This latest high-level visit highlights Turkey’s intent to further expand its influence through elite force cooperation.
The visit also comes at a time when Somalia faces threats from al-Shabaab and seeks to reduce reliance on African Union peacekeepers through improved national security structures.
