Trump's Declassified Files Show Russian Election Interference, not Chinese Meddling

Newly declassified intelligence documents released by the White House to substantiate claims of Chinese election interference have instead highlighted Moscow's extensive campaigns to influence U.S. presidential races.

Despite a prime-time address heavily focused on Beijing, the underlying intelligence repository provided by the administration reinforces historical findings of Kremlin-directed operations aimed at altering American electoral outcomes, according to The New York Times.

Selective Intelligence Focus

During his 25-minute address, Donald Trump reiterated long-standing assertions regarding the 2020 election while placing primary emphasis on alleged Chinese interference.

However, the newly released files largely reflect intelligence made public years ago detailing Russian operations rather than fresh evidence against Beijing.

“He forgets or just omits that the biggest country that tries to influence on every election is Russia,” Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on Sunday during an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“We’ve documented that time and again.”

Documented Kremlin Operations

The declassified materials center on an August 2020 National Intelligence Council assessment concluding that Russian President Vladimir Putin oversaw efforts to damage Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s candidacy.

The analysis detailed how Moscow coordinated with proxies to engineer political corruption scandals, specifically targeting Biden through Ukrainian energy firm Burisma.

“Their aim is to defeat the former vice president,” Biden, “and ensure the president’s victory,” the intelligence council concluded.

Subsequent intelligence assessments from March 2021 confirmed that Russian intelligence proxies systematically funneled false narratives to American media outlets and figures close to the Trump administration.

Disinformation and Intelligence Leadership

Kremlin-aligned operatives also promoted conspiracy theories claiming Ukraine intervened in the 2016 election, a narrative that previously featured in Trump's first impeachment proceedings.

While the declassified files also noted aggressive actions by Iranian operatives ordered by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, these findings were similarly downplayed during the address in favor of criticizing China.

The selective presentation comes as the White House installs loyalists to oversee intelligence agencies, including housing official Bill Pulte serving as acting director of national intelligence.

Subsequent congressional inquiries failed to uncover incriminating evidence regarding the Biden-Burisma allegations, leaving the administration's claims largely unsupported by its own released documentation.
