Trump Warns of ‘Severe Consequences’ if Putin Blocks Ukraine Peace

With the eyes of the world on Friday’s Alaska summit, President Donald Trump issued a pointed warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin: agree to peace in Ukraine or face severe repercussions. Speaking to reporters after a video conference with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump declined to detail the measures but hinted at economic tools such as sanctions or tariffs, saying only, “I don’t have to say. There will be very severe consequences”.

Setting the Stages For Negotations

Trump characterized the Alaska meeting as “setting the table” for a potential quick follow-up that could include Zelensky alongside Putin. “If the first one goes okay, we’ll have a quick second meeting… almost immediately,” he said, leaving the timeframe undefined.

The warning followed a high-level virtual conference hosted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin. European leaders and Zelensky used the call to establish clear red lines before Trump meets Putin, fearing the U.S. might cut a deal that sidelines Kyiv or carves up Ukrainian territory. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that Trump agreed Ukraine must be directly involved in any talks on ceding land and that the U.S. wanted a ceasefire as an immediate outcome in Alaska.

Zelensky said Trump had also signaled support for security guarantees in a post-war settlement—an issue central to Kyiv’s concerns about future Russian aggression. Merz underscored that if Russia refused to move in Alaska, the U.S. and Europe should “increase the pressure,” maintaining the principle that borders cannot be altered by force.

Russian Pressure Ahead of the Summit

The diplomatic maneuvering comes as Russian forces have made a sharp push into eastern Ukraine in recent days. Zelensky dismissed the offensive as a bluff designed to convince the world that Russia could conquer all of Ukraine, thereby gaining leverage in negotiations. He warned European and U.S. counterparts that Moscow’s goal is to arrive in Alaska with the appearance of battlefield dominance.

Kyiv fears any “land swap” arrangement could leave Russia in control of nearly a fifth of Ukraine, rewarding years of aggression and setting a dangerous precedent. Putin’s formal preconditions for a ceasefire—Ukraine’s withdrawal from four regions Russia claims but does not fully control, and renouncing NATO membership—were quickly rejected by Zelensky as tantamount to surrender.

Despite war fatigue, Ukrainian public opinion remains firmly opposed to major territorial concessions. A Gallup poll last week found that while 69% of Ukrainians support a negotiated end to the war “as soon as possible,” they are unwilling to accept a settlement that sacrifices large areas of the country.

Trump’s agreement to hold the Alaska summit marked a shift after weeks of frustration with Putin’s resistance to U.S.-led peace efforts. The change came after his envoy, Steve Witkoff, returned from Moscow claiming “great progress” in preliminary talks. Still, European leaders remain cautious, welcoming Trump’s engagement but warning that “there should be no deal without Ukraine’s participation.”
