U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Wednesday in Doha to discuss ongoing negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire, according to Axios reporter Barak Ravid. The talks are centered on a U.S.-backed proposal calling for a 60-day ceasefire, phased releases of hostages, Israeli troop withdrawals from parts of Gaza, and further negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.

The discussions come as Israeli and Hamas negotiators have been in Qatar since July 6, seeking progress under the mediation of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. However, deep divisions persist, especially over the extent of an eventual Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian enclave.

Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, expressed hope on Sunday for the talks, noting Qatar’s key mediating role between the two sides.

The latest outbreak of violence began in October 2023 with Hamas’ attack on Israel, which Israel claims killed 1,200 people and led to the capture of about 250 hostages. Gaza’s health ministry says Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 58,000 Palestinians, caused mass displacement, and triggered accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and war crimes at the International Criminal Court — charges Israel denies.

A previous two-month ceasefire collapsed in March after Israeli strikes killed over 400 Palestinians. Trump earlier this year controversially proposed a U.S. administration of Gaza — a plan widely condemned by rights groups, the United Nations, and Palestinians as ethnic cleansing.

In addition to the ceasefire discussions, Trump and Sheikh Mohammed are expected to address potential efforts to resume talks with Iran over a new nuclear agreement, according to Axios.
