Trump on F-35 Sales to Türkiye: 'I Will Make Erdogan Very Happy'

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signaled a potential breakthrough regarding Türkiye’s acquisition of F-35 fighter jets and F-110 engines.

He stated he will likely take actions that will make Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan "very happy."

The remarks come ahead of an upcoming NATO summit, which Trump confirmed he will attend specifically out of respect for the Turkish leader.

F-35 Sales Under Compliance Review

U.S. officials are actively assessing Ankara's compliance with American law to facilitate the transfer of F-35 stealth fighters.

JD Vance confirmed that the administration is currently "running the traps" to ensure all certification requirements are met.

Vance noted the evaluation follows a direct request from the president. He added that finalizing the transfer remains a congressional process.

When questioned about delivering a "gift bag" of F-110 engines and F-35 jets to Ankara, Trump affirmed that it was possible.

He emphasized that Erdogan is a strong NATO member and underscored the strategic value of the Turkish military.

Regional Stance

Trump highlighted Erdogan's decision to remain neutral during recent regional conflicts.

He noted the Turkish leader was a prime candidate to enter a potential war with Iran.

According to Trump, Erdogan stayed out of the conflict at his direct request.

The U.S. president added that Erdogan's position was partly influenced by his critical stance toward Israel.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte reinforced Türkiye's strategic value during the discussions.

He cited the country's extensive defense industrial base, which includes 3,000 companies operating across the alliance and the U.S.

NATO Spending Tensions

While elevating defense ties with Türkiye, Trump expressed broad dissatisfaction with other NATO members.

He accused several European nations of failing to meet a 5% defense spending target.

Rutte countered that such spending levels cannot be achieved in a single year, though Trump dismissed the objection.

The U.S. president voiced particular disappointment with Germany, France, Italy, and the U.K.

He described Spain as a "horror show" seeking a free ride on American defense commitments.

Trump demanded greater loyalty from the alliance, citing the presence of 50,000 U.S. troops in Germany.

He noted the U.S. felt let down by allied inaction during recent international incidents.
