U.S. President Donald Trump adopted a noticeably more conciliatory tone during his first in-person meeting with New York’s newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani at the White House. Trump described Mamdani’s election win as “an impressive success achieved against very strong competitors” and offered his congratulations.
“We All Want New York to Thrive”
After the meeting, Trump said:
We love this city, and we want to see it in good shape. I congratulate the mayor—he came out strong from a very competitive election.
Trump, who had frequently criticized Mamdani in the past, spoke more positively this time:
We may have disagreements, but I believe he can accomplish very good work. I met someone reasonable, someone who wants to see New York great again and is focused on that goal.
“A Productive Meeting for a More Livable New York”
Zohran Mamdani said he was satisfied with the discussion, emphasizing that the meeting centered on the daily economic challenges New Yorkers face.
“We talked about affordable housing, rising rents, grocery prices, public services… all of it. We discussed the various ways people are being pushed out of their homes. I’m pleased with the time and the conversation, and I look forward to working together to deliver affordable housing solutions.”
Key Issues on the Table: Housing, Rent and Cost of Living
A significant portion of the meeting focused on New York’s deepening social and economic issues. Mamdani highlighted the city’s uncontrolled rent increases, the rising cost of basic necessities, and the growing difficulty of accessing essential public services.
Both sides appeared aligned on the urgency of addressing these challenges in the new governing period.
Cooperation Despite Political Differences
The first meeting between Trump and Mamdani delivered a message of cooperation that transcended political divides. Their shared willingness to stay at the table on New York’s most pressing issues offers a hopeful beginning for the millions who call the city home.
