Trump is Threatening Democracy as US Marks 250 Years: Report

As the United States prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence, Human Rights Watch released a web feature documenting what it called a sweeping assault by the Trump administration on the human rights essential to democratic governance.

"Respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms is an essential element of democracy," said Tanya Greene, U.S. director at Human Rights Watch.

"The Trump administration has been violating human rights across the board, including many that are intrinsically bound up with the meaningful exercise of democracy."

Immigration Enforcement: Killings, Force, and No Oversight

Among the most documented areas is immigration enforcement.

In January 2026, HRW found that an unjustified killing by ICE agents in Minneapolis took place, one of several unlawful use-of-force incidents documented during the administration's mass enforcement operations.

The human cost extends to children. In March 2026, HRW documented the case of a child who was deprived of hearing aids during deportation, one of many cases the organization says illustrates the cruelty embedded in current enforcement practices.

Voting Rights Under Pressure

The web feature also tracks a sustained attack on the right to vote.

A March 2026 entry covers the erosion of Black voting rights in Mississippi, documenting how structural barriers continue to suppress minority political participation.

The rights watchdog calls on the US to allow people with felony convictions to vote, a restriction HRW says disproportionately disenfranchises Black Americans and runs counter to democratic principles.

The Trump administration's push for the SAVE America Act, which would impose strict voter ID requirements and effectively end widespread mail-in voting, has drawn particular criticism from HRW as an effort to impose unwarranted restrictions on voter registration that could exclude millions from the electoral process.

The Broader Picture

HRW said the administration has substantively undermined or threatened the rule of law, free speech and expression, civil rights remedies for discrimination, and key oversight and transparency mechanisms, all in the first half of 2026 alone.

"The U.S. should celebrate the nation's founding principles and promise," Greene said.

"That includes acknowledging and challenging its failings and working to guarantee human rights and democracy for all."
