Trump: Iran May See Sanctions Relief If It “Can Be Peaceful”
Trump signals possible sanctions relief for Iran if it halts hostile actions. Comments follow U.S. airstrikes and tense ceasefire with Israel.

President Donald Trump stated Sunday that Iran could receive sanctions relief if it “can be peaceful,” combining renewed threats with a cautious opening for diplomacy following U.S.-led strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and a fragile ceasefire.
Trump Shifts Tone on Iran Policy
Speaking to Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures, Trump said, “If they can show us they’re not going to do any more harm, I would take the sanctions off.” He acknowledged considering sanctions relief after the ceasefire but reversed course after Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claimed victory in the conflict.
While sanctions remain active, Trump clarified that Iran’s behavior—especially its regional posture and nuclear activity—will determine any future relaxation.
Mixed Signals and Strategic Ambiguity
Trump had earlier said he doesn’t mind China continuing to buy Iranian oil, prompting speculation over U.S. enforcement. White House officials later denied any policy shift.
He also repeated his assertion that U.S. strikes had “obliterated” parts of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, though IAEA chief Rafael Grossi countered that claim, stating that Iran could resume enrichment “in a matter of months.”
Graham Sets a Diplomatic Condition
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, appearing on ABC, said Iran must recognize Israel’s right to exist before the U.S. re-engages in serious negotiations. “If they can’t say that, you’re never going to get a deal worth a damn,” he warned.
