Trump Claims Iran “About to Surrender” in G7 Call
U.S. President Trump told G7 leaders that Iran is “about to surrender,” while Iran’s new supreme leader vowed to continue fighting, highlighting a widening gap between U.S. expectations and the situation on the ground.

Trump boasted about the results of Operation Epic Fury, claiming he had eliminated a “cancer threatening us all.” He suggested Tehran had no officials with the authority to surrender, calling the new Iranian supreme leader a “lightweight.”
Trump’s remarks highlighted confusion over objectives and timing. Some G7 participants believed he intended to wind down the war, while others interpreted his comments as a plan for continued escalation. He emphasized the need to finish the job to avoid another conflict with Iran in the future.
Hours after the call, Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first public statement, vowing to avenge Iranian “martyrs” and open new fronts where the enemy is vulnerable. He reiterated that Iran would continue threatening the Strait of Hormuz, where tanker attacks have pushed oil prices above $100 a barrel, raising fears of a global economic crisis.
The G7 call also addressed concerns over Russia’s role in the crisis. European leaders — including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron — warned Trump not to let Moscow benefit from the war or gain sanctions relief.
Despite objections from European powers, the U.S. Treasury issued a 30-day waiver on sanctions for Russian oil in transit, aimed at stabilizing energy markets without benefiting Russia financially.
Trump also mocked Starmer over initially refusing British bases for strikes on Iran, saying the offer came too late once the conflict had already begun.
