The newly deployed units come from Guriceel and Matabaan districts and are expected to reinforce local Ma’awisley militias in the battle for Moqokori, which holds strategic value as a link between key districts in the region. One commander from the Habargidir clan emphasized the historical solidarity behind their involvement. “We are ready to die alongside them—it is a duty of brotherhood,” he said, referencing past cooperation with the Hawadle clan.

Social media videos showed convoys of military vehicles arriving in Mahaas to a warm welcome from residents, reflecting public support for the offensive.

Moqokori’s Loss Spurs Mobilization

Moqokori fell into Al-Shabaab hands in recent weeks following internal disputes among local leaders and the withdrawal of federal forces. Officials say the new campaign is crucial to reversing Al-Shabaab’s territorial gains and restoring stability in Hiiraan.

The offensive, backed by both local and national forces, marks a renewed effort to dismantle Al-Shabaab strongholds in central Somalia after several years of fluctuating control.
