Syrian President Reports Progress In Israel Talks

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Sunday signaled that Damascus and Tel Aviv are making progress in security talks, describing them as “advanced discussions” focused on the 1974 disengagement agreement. Speaking to an Arab media delegation, al-Sharaa said he “will not hesitate to take any agreement or decision that serves Syria’s and the region’s interests.” The talks come at a sensitive moment for the region, as U.S. mediation seeks to reduce hostilities, preserve Syrian sovereignty, and create new frameworks for stability.

Al-Sharaa reiterated that any future security understanding with Israel must be based on the 1974 truce line, which set out military disengagement zones known as the Alpha and Bravo lines. The accord created a buffer zone under the supervision of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) to prevent direct clashes. Syrian media highlighted that Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani met with an Israeli delegation in Paris last week, where discussions centered on de-escalation, noninterference in Syrian affairs, and measures to revive the truce mechanisms.

Focus On Suwayda And Stability Measures

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, the Paris talks also addressed the ceasefire in Suwayda province in southern Syria, a region that has witnessed recent unrest. The agenda included monitoring mechanisms and guarantees to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity. While al-Sharaa noted that he does not see conditions as favorable for a full peace deal, he stressed readiness to accept agreements that could reinforce stability.

The discussions are being mediated by Washington, as part of broader diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region and explore avenues for security arrangements. Reports said the talks are aimed at “bolstering security and stability in Syria and preserving its unity.” Observers view the progress as one of the most significant developments in Syrian-Israeli contacts since the 1974 disengagement agreement, with the potential to affect regional dynamics if concrete steps are reached.
