Somali President Meets AU Commission Chair On Security Issues
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf in Addis Ababa to discuss Somalia’s stabilization and regional security.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a high-level meeting with African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on July 29 at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa. The two leaders discussed Somalia’s ongoing stabilization process, regional peace initiatives, and the transition of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The meeting underscores Somalia’s commitment to working closely with continental institutions to strengthen peacebuilding, security, and institutional development.
The discussion highlighted the importance of a smooth and strategic transition from ATMIS operations to fully Somali-led security structures. President Hassan Sheikh reaffirmed his government’s commitment to taking full ownership of national security responsibilities, while also appreciating the African Union’s role in maintaining peace and supporting Somali state-building.
Chairperson Youssouf emphasized continued AU support for Somalia’s stabilization and the broader goal of regional peace. Both leaders agreed on enhancing coordination between Somali institutions and AU organs to ensure sustainable progress.
