Somali, AU Forces Launch Offensive In Lower Shabelle

Lower Shabelle, a fertile region critical to Somalia’s economy, has remained a contested zone between government forces and Al-Shabaab militants. The targeted towns of Haway and Barire are situated along routes frequently used by the group to transport weapons and fighters. Commanders leading the operation stated that Al-Shabaab fighters had already been dislodged from several positions, and operations would continue until all militants in the area are neutralized.

The Somali military has intensified pressure on the group in recent months, often with support from AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) units. Local residents report that recent clashes have pushed Al-Shabaab fighters deeper into remote villages and forests, complicating efforts to fully clear the area.
