Golob stated that the measure is intended to break what he described as EU inaction caused by internal divisions in Brussels. “It is the duty of every responsible state to take action,” he said, urging other EU nations to consider similar bans.

Germany, Italy, and the UK have significantly larger defense trade relations with Israel and have yet to signal similar moves. Analysts note that broader European alignment on the issue remains unlikely in the near term, but Slovenia’s decision could add pressure to the ongoing policy debate within the bloc.

Ljubljana Escalates Diplomatic Pressure On Israel

Slovenia has taken a series of actions against Israel in recent months. In July, it became the first EU member state to declare Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich as personae non gratae, a move later echoed by the Netherlands.

Slovenia also recognized the State of Palestine in 2024, joining Spain, Ireland, and Norway in doing so. In late July 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would follow suit, a move that drew criticism from both Israel and the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Though the arms ban is largely symbolic in terms of military logistics, it reinforces Slovenia’s foreign policy alignment with pro-Palestinian positions and sets a precedent within the European Union.
