A Democratic Senate aide told CNN the letters went to private companies and the Trump administration.
The requests aim to keep records ready for probes after Democrats take Congress in January 2027.
Similar letters also went to ports, banks, and private groups tied to a Russian diesel deal, the aide said.
Standard Preservation Step
The aide called it the committee’s “standard procedure” for preserving documents.
It covers people suspected of violating the law “or participating in certain activities.”
ProtoThema English, citing CNN, said such letters do not imply a finding of unlawful conduct.
Starshield Backdrop
The letters follow October limits that slowed SpaceX’s military Starshield service in Ukraine.
Those limits disrupted drone and interceptor missions.
A bipartisan Senate request for a Pentagon inspector general probe was later refused.
Musk has said Starshield is owned and controlled by the U.S. government.
Committee Leadership Shift
CNN sources said Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the committee’s senior Democrat, is retiring.
Sen. Chris Coons is expected to become chair.
Democrats won both chambers in the midterms.
They are expected to intensify oversight of Trump administration decisions once the new Congress convenes.
