Six U.S. Secret Service agents have been suspended following an investigation into the July 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The agents, including five based at the Pittsburgh field office and one from Trump’s personal detail, received unpaid suspensions ranging from 10 to 42 days.

The internal disciplinary action comes days before the one-year anniversary of the shooting that killed firefighter Corey Comperatore and wounded two others. A bullet grazed Trump’s ear, prompting his now-iconic “fight, fight” gesture amid chaos on stage.

DHS Probe Uncovers Multiple Missed Warnings

The Department of Homeland Security launched a full review after the incident, which led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. In her congressional testimony, Cheatle admitted agents had been alerted to the shooter—20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks—between two and five times prior to the attack. Crooks had climbed onto a rooftop overlooking the rally and opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle before being killed by a sniper.

The attack triggered national scrutiny of the agency’s protective measures. A bipartisan House task force continues to investigate possible systemic failures in leadership and coordination with local law enforcement.

Trump Survived Second Attack Weeks Later

Trump later survived a second assassination attempt in September 2024 while golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida. Though the details of that incident remain limited, officials confirmed he was not harmed.

As of Thursday, the Secret Service has declined to comment on the exact timing of the disciplinary actions. The internal review is part of broader efforts to restore confidence in the agency’s mission to protect national figures.
