Satellite Images Reveal Gazans Swarming Aid Trucks as Famine Worsens

A striking satellite image taken from 200 miles above Gaza shows hundreds of Palestinians mobbing a convoy of aid trucks, underlining the depth of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the besieged enclave.
Captured on July 26 by Planet Labs and released Monday, the image shows a dense crowd surrounding about a dozen trucks navigating through rubble-strewn terrain near the Morag Corridor, the strip separating Khan Younis and Rafah.
Videos taken on the ground at the same time show desperate civilians climbing the vehicles to access food cargo. One man is seen emerging with a box labeled “food rations,” while others jostle and shove, creating a chaotic and dangerous scene.
Hunger Breeds Chaos
The scramble for food has become increasingly violent. In some cases, people have been killed by Israeli gunfire at aid distribution sites or crushed in stampedes. Earlier this month, at least 20 Palestinians died in such a crush at an aid point, according to aid organizations.
Many who return home from the melee do so empty-handed. Those who manage to secure supplies—such as flour—may resell them in black markets. Elderly, infirm, and risk-averse Gazans are often left with no choice but to purchase these supplies at steep prices.
The source and destination of the trucks remain unclear, but their presence is one of few lifelines left for a population now teetering on the edge of famine. “Gaza is hungrier than ever now,” aid workers warn, with famine fears mounting as the war drags on.
A War-Induced Humanitarian Collapse
The latest satellite and video evidence illustrate the staggering breakdown of humanitarian infrastructure in Gaza, more than 10 months into the war that began in October 2023. Israel’s bombardment and blockade, in response to the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, have devastated civilian areas and created extreme scarcity of food, fuel, and medicine.
With aid corridors often closed or tightly controlled, convoys that do make it through are quickly overwhelmed. “Even from orbit, the signs of anguish and desperation were visible,” wrote the New York Times in its visual report.
