Lavrov told reporters that Moscow respects North Korea’s decision to develop nuclear weapons, claiming it is a sovereign response to US military threats. “We understand the reasons behind North Korea’s nuclear development,” he said, noting the technologies were developed by “its own scientists.”
During talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s gratitude for Pyongyang’s support in the Ukraine war, including the contribution of North Korean troops in battles along Russia’s border with Ukraine. Choe, in return, described the Russia-North Korea relationship as “an invincible alliance.”
Military Drills And Strategic Messaging
The visit comes just after the US, South Korea, and Japan held joint air drills involving US nuclear-capable bombers. Their top defense officials also met in Seoul, calling on North Korea to halt unlawful activities and nuclear provocations.
Russia’s message was clear: it opposes any trilateral alignment that targets its allies. Lavrov said, “We warn against exploiting these ties to build alliances directed against anyone, including North Korea and, of course, Russia.”
As Russia deepens its military and economic ties with North Korea, the strategic triangle forming between Moscow, Pyongyang, and Beijing continues to challenge Western influence in East Asia.
