Germany is holding “intensive talks” to ensure the continued delivery of Patriot air-defense systems to Ukraine, following a temporary hold on U.S. weapons shipments and escalating Russian drone and missile strikes.
Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said Friday that the administration of Chancellor Friedrich Merz is exploring “different ways” to address Ukraine’s urgent defense needs. He declined to confirm whether direct negotiations with Washington were underway for additional Patriot batteries.
“I can say that intensive discussions are indeed taking place on this matter,” Kornelius told reporters in Berlin.
The talks come as Kyiv warns of increasing vulnerability to air assaults, with Russia ramping up attacks on infrastructure and urban centres. Ukraine has repeatedly appealed for more Western air-defense systems, especially Patriot launchers capable of intercepting long-range missiles.
Germany has been one of Europe’s leading suppliers of military aid to Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion began in 2022. Any delays or logistical hurdles in weapons transfers—particularly from the U.S.—have heightened concerns among NATO allies.
The Merz government has signaled its intention to continue supporting Ukraine while also navigating domestic political pressure and defense procurement constraints.
