According to federal prosecutors, the suspects launched glass bottles, rocks, and fireworks at ICE officers during a protest that escalated into a riot. In some cases, protesters used high-powered lasers aimed at agents’ eyes to cause disorientation or injury. The charges include assault on a federal officer, civil disorder, and unlawful entry onto federal property.
The Department of Justice stated that these actions “went far beyond peaceful protest,” describing them as coordinated efforts to harm and obstruct federal personnel. Prosecutors stressed that such tactics endangered lives and federal infrastructure during a time of heightened unrest in Portland.
Officials Condemn Attacks on Law Enforcement
Acting U.S. Attorney Scott Asphaug condemned the violence, emphasizing that, “assaulting law enforcement officers with dangerous weapons is not peaceful protest—it is a crime and will be prosecuted as such.” He stated that protecting federal agents remains a priority and warned against attempts to justify criminal conduct under the guise of protest.
The arrests were made following an investigation involving the Federal Protective Service and Homeland Security Investigations. The ICE facility in South Portland has seen repeated protests in recent months, some turning violent. Officials reiterated their support for lawful demonstrations but affirmed that assaults on law enforcement would face firm legal consequences.
