Under the new guidelines, armed forces personnel will phase out WhatsApp in favor of WeChat, China's dominant multi-purpose platform that integrates messaging, voice and video communications, and secure file sharing.

The technological shift aligns with the deepening defense relationship between Beijing and Islamabad, which has increasingly expanded beyond military hardware procurement into cybersecurity and intelligence cooperation.

Pakistan's official embrace of WeChat highlights a sharp divergence in regional defense posture compared to neighboring India.

New Delhi banned WeChat alongside dozens of Chinese applications in June 2020 on national security grounds, citing allegations of unauthorized data transfers outside its borders.

While India excluded the platform over espionage risks, Islamabad is positioning the Chinese software as the primary medium for its secure internal military communications.
