North Korea has unveiled images of a new warship under construction at the Nampho Shipyard, with the vessel appearing larger than the country's existing 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class destroyers.

The images, released by North Korean state media on Wednesday, show the vessel's hull under construction during leader Kim Jong Un's inspection of the shipyard on November 2.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim called for expanding shipbuilding capacity and modernizing production facilities to strengthen the country's naval forces.

Kim described the new vessel as significantly larger than the destroyer built last year, signaling Pyongyang's ambitions to develop heavier surface combatants.

The ship could be part of North Korea's previously announced plans to construct 10,000-ton cruisers, although its exact displacement, classification and weapons systems have not been independently confirmed.

Satellite imagery analyzed by NK News has also identified new warship construction activity at the Nampho and Chongjin shipyards, alongside infrastructure upgrades at both facilities.

North Korea has already commissioned two 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class destroyers, equipped with missile launch systems intended to expand the navy's strike capabilities.

The latest construction project forms part of Kim's broader naval modernization program, which includes plans to build larger warships and strengthen maritime military capabilities.
