The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) has announced the launch of a new humanitarian ship, the Handala, set to depart from Syracuse, Italy, on July 13. The initiative aims to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza and deliver aid and solidarity to its besieged population.

The Handala, a former fishing vessel from the 1960s, has already toured several European ports to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The ship will carry doctors, lawyers, social justice activists, and journalists. However, French MEP Rima Hassan, who took part in the earlier Madleen mission in June, will not join this voyage.

Mission Dedicated To Gaza’s Children

The FFC emphasized that this mission is “dedicated to the children of Gaza,” referencing Handala—the cartoon figure symbolizing Palestinian resistance and identity. “This boat carries the spirit of Handala and of every child in Gaza who has been denied safety, dignity, and joy,” the coalition said in a statement.

According to the FFC, over 50,000 children have been killed or injured since October 2023, with nearly a million displaced and now facing famine and disease under ongoing Israeli bombardment and siege. The flotilla seeks to break this isolation and draw attention to the humanitarian catastrophe.

The previous mission, involving the Madleen and passengers including Greta Thunberg, was intercepted in international waters by the Israeli navy and redirected to Ashdod. Participants were detained and later deported.

France Calls For Ceasefire, Supports Two-State Solution

French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated his call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza during a speech before the British Parliament. “Calling for a ceasefire without conditions is simply affirming that there is no double standard,” Macron said, adding that a two-state solution and recognition of a Palestinian state remain the only path to lasting peace.

The launch of the Handala comes amid continued calls from civil society groups to act against what they describe as a genocidal campaign and to reaffirm international solidarity with the Palestinian people.
