Netanyahu delivered the remarks during Modi’s official visit to Israel, using the parliamentary platform to underscore historical links between the two countries while also addressing broader regional dynamics.
Speaking at the Knesset, Netanyahu said that during World War I, when the land was under Ottoman rule, forces that helped “liberate” the country included the British Army, which contained Jewish fighters such as members of the first Jewish battalion associated with Ze’ev Jabotinsky.
He further highlighted the Battle of Haifa, stating that “brave Indian soldiers and commanders fought like lions.” According to Netanyahu, when forces were pushed back, it was Indian commanders who advanced and gave their lives. “We never forget that. They gave their lives for us,” he said.
His characterization of the period as “Ottoman occupation” and his emphasis on foreign forces’ role in Haifa’s capture stood out as notable elements of the speech.
Indian Prime Minister Modi stated on social media that he was pleased to return to Israel after nine years. He confirmed holding talks with Netanyahu focused on strengthening bilateral relations and reviewing regional developments.
Modi noted significant potential for closer cooperation in technology, water management, agriculture, and several other sectors.
The visit also comes amid Netanyahu’s proposal to establish a new regional “alliance axis.” Speaking ahead of the visit on February 22, Netanyahu said the envisioned framework would include India, certain Arab and African countries, as well as Greece, Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, and several Asian nations.
He argued that the objective is to form a bloc of countries facing similar challenges. “This axis stands against both the radical Shiite axis, which we have struck very hard, and the emerging radical Sunni axis,” Netanyahu said at the time.
Modi had expressed support for closer strategic coordination ahead of the visit.
