The United States and India launched their first jointly developed Earth observation satellite on July 30, marking a significant milestone in international space collaboration. The satellite, named NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar), was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in southeastern India.

Equipped with dual synthetic aperture radar systems developed by NASA and ISRO, NISAR is designed to monitor subtle shifts in the Earth’s surface—changes that are often invisible to the naked eye but critical for understanding natural disasters and climate change.

Scanning Earth in High Resolution

Orbiting the Earth 14 times daily, NISAR will perform high-resolution scans of nearly all land and ice surfaces on the planet every 12 days. It will monitor phenomena such as landslides, earthquakes, glacier movements, forest changes, wetlands, and farmland conditions.

The radar systems utilize microwave signals to detect movements and variations in terrain. NASA’s system—developed specifically for space use—enables enhanced imaging and data resolution.

Data collected by NISAR will be freely available to scientists, disaster-response teams, and the general public. This is expected to greatly aid in preparation and response to hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, floods, and wildfires.
