MQ-9 Drones Deployed to Nigeria to Boost Counter-insurgency

The United States has expanded its military footprint in Nigeria with the deployment of MQ-9 Reaper drones alongside 200 troops sent last month, signaling a recalibration of its counterterrorism posture in West Africa following its exit from Niger.

The drones were deployed after the arrival of approximately 200 U.S. personnel last month, tasked with intelligence-sharing, advisory roles and training.

According to U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), forces are “working alongside their Nigerian counterparts to provide intelligence support, advisory assistance, and targeted training.”

Both troops and drones are based at Bauchi Airfield in northeastern Nigeria.

The MQ-9 Reaper - a platform capable of flying above 40,000 feet for more than 30 hours - has been widely used in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen. Each unit costs around $30 million and can conduct both surveillance and airstrikes, though AFRICOM states the drones in Nigeria are restricted to intelligence-gathering and training roles.

The number of deployed drones has not been disclosed. The move follows the closure of a major U.S. drone base in Niger after the country’s military junta expelled U.S. forces, forcing a redistribution of regional assets.

Nigeria faces overlapping threats from multiple armed groups including Daesh-affiliated terror groups and other armed bandits engaged in kidnapping and illegal mining.

The insurgency, which began in 2009, has killed more than 40,000 people, according to United Nations data. Violence has intensified, including three suicide bombings earlier this month in Maiduguri that killed at least 23 people and injured 108.

The expansion highlights Nigeria’s growing centrality in U.S. regional strategy, as Washington adapts to shifting basing arrangements and evolving militant threats across the Sahel and Lake Chad basin.
