MAGA Base Abandons Support for Trump's Iran War as Economic Costs Rise: Poll

A majority of President Donald Trump’s core MAGA base no longer believes the ongoing military conflict with Iran is worth its domestic economic burden, according to a July POLITICO/Public First survey.

Support among Trump’s most loyal voters for absorbing the financial fallout of the campaign fell by 13 percentage points in just two months, leaving barely a third in favor.

The polling shift underscores growing fatigue within the Republican coalition three months before critical midterm elections dominated by inflation and living costs.

Base Fractures Over Economic Costs

According to the survey, 37 percent of self-identified MAGA voters now condition future U.S. involvement on avoiding further cost increases.

An additional 20 percent of MAGA respondents favor terminating the military operation entirely, regardless of the economic consequences.

Discontent is even more pronounced among non-MAGA Trump voters, where only 21 percent consider the operation worth higher financial burdens.

Gas Prices Fuel Voter Discontent

Retail gasoline prices have climbed above $4 per gallon amid escalating tit-for-tat strikes between U.S. forces and Iran following the collapse of a tentative peace agreement.

A distinct majority of Trump’s supporters directly attribute rising energy prices to the conflict, including 57 percent of MAGA voters and 63 percent of non-MAGA Trump voters.

The economic impact is compounded by human losses, following the deaths of two U.S. servicemembers in Jordan and the transfer of more than a dozen fallen soldiers at Dover Air Force Base.

Administration Maintains Unyielding Stance

Despite the erosion of base support, President Trump has indicated little interest in softening his posture toward Tehran.

Speaking on Tuesday regarding Iranian officials, Trump claimed that "until they are ready to meet in a meaningful way we have no interest in even talking."

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales dismissed the political pressure, stating, "The President does not make national security decisions based on fluid opinion polls, but on the best interests of the American people."

Political Realities and Midterm Risks

Insiders close to the executive mansion describe an environment of mounting frustration over the political viability of sustained military escalation.

One source granted anonymity to discuss private deliberations noted: "We’ve got more dead Americans and a politically impossible situation."

Republican strategists in key races continue to express concern over potential electoral blowback, warning that public patience with the prolonged foreign engagement has largely expired.
