During the meeting with senior military officials and unit commanders, Gen. Hélou emphasized that border security remains one of the army’s top strategic objectives. The army is particularly focused on threats emanating from the eastern and northern regions, where smuggling and militant infiltration remain persistent challenges. Coordination with Syrian authorities was described as “vital” for maintaining bilateral border security and regional stability.
Hélou also addressed the situation in southern Lebanon, confirming the army’s expanded deployment south of the Litani River in close cooperation with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He noted that Israeli forces still occupy multiple positions along the border following recent hostilities, which limits full military redeployment in some areas. Local residents in the south have reportedly shown full cooperation with the Lebanese army, while contacts continue with the UN’s ceasefire monitoring committee.
Military Under Pressure From Internal And External Threats
General Hélou acknowledged the increasing challenges facing the army, citing growing Israeli attacks, civil unrest, and economic hardship. He praised the resilience and sacrifices of military personnel in maintaining national defense, noting that the institution has remained functional despite worsening conditions.
The commander reaffirmed the army’s readiness to defend Lebanese sovereignty and respond to any external aggression. He warned of escalating Israeli violations that have resulted in casualties and material damage, calling for vigilance and unity among all military ranks.
