Kremlin: Trump’s Threats Are “Very Serious” And Target Putin
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest remarks on Russia are “very serious” and require careful analysis by Moscow.
Peskov acknowledged that “something in [Trump’s statements] is addressed personally to Putin,” hinting at the U.S. president’s expressed disappointment with the Russian leader. “Putin will respond if he deems it necessary,” Peskov added.
The remarks follow Trump’s threats to impose harsh secondary tariffs on Russian exports unless Moscow agrees to a ceasefire with Ukraine within 50 days. Trump also indicated Ukraine could be authorized to strike Moscow and St. Petersburg using advanced U.S. weapons systems.
Peskov downplayed the novelty of such threats, saying that “this kind of rhetoric is not new,” but emphasized the need to assess its implications carefully.
The Kremlin confirmed it has received no official proposals from Ukraine regarding a new round of direct negotiations. Peskov’s comments came amid broader warnings from Russian officials, including Dmitry Medvedev and Sergey Ryabkov, who rejected Trump’s ultimatum and labeled it ineffective.
Russia continues to frame Washington’s posture as aggressive and unconstructive, accusing the U.S. of sabotaging diplomatic efforts while intensifying military support to Ukraine through NATO.
Meanwhile, Western diplomats suggest the coming weeks could determine whether Trump’s pressure campaign forces a diplomatic breakthrough or provokes further escalation.
